Experimental Butterfly Zoodie

i was asked to attempt a butterfly zoodie...i love getting special requests...well, scratch that - i love getting most special requests...the lady who asked me to also make a red vest and hat for the monkey to complete her son's school play costume, i wasn't so much into. but new animals that little kids may love - that is fun!

i had been thinking about a butterfly - or something with wings - for a bit...i just wasn't quite sure how to piece it all together...so i did what i usually did...made it up as i went along...i am still not quite sure about it. i think i will need to work with it before it goes up in the shop, but i am happy with how it turned out.

originally i was thinking a pink sweatshirt with a pink and purple-ish tie-dyed type sheer fabric for the wings, but i found this pretty orange and yellow sheer fabric and thought it would make for a pretty little butterfly...

i made the majority of it this morning while the boys were busy eating...what i meant by that is that bryson ate while bodie threw most of his food everywhere. but somehow it worked out...even if i did have quite a clean-up job afterward :)

i thought i would have to bribe Bryson into modeling somehow, but he will not take it off! he says he is like batman...so the next one coming up is a bat one for sure. he loved it - zipped around the yard in it and watched his shadow dance on the ground - loved it. so i guess its first test run was a success, because he is a hard sell.

Hope you like it Whitney...or more importantly, hope your niece likes it!

PS - comments are appreciated as i am trying to decide whether or not this one should be up, or if it needs an overhaul!

Sooo...I don't know much about sewing, so take my comment with a grain of salt. I like the concept, but the body down the back is the part that seems out of place...but I'm not sure what you would do about it. And what about sewing some spots on the front of the actual sweatshirt. I love that you will make a bat next...it's fun watching you create these!

I love it! I think little balls on the ends of the antennas would be good though, I think you did that for the lady bug version... And I would second Kaci in the recommendation to ditch the body... I think the wings are great with out it, unless, you need it to hide where you stitch the wings on, then I wouldn't worry about it. A bat will be awesome!

I think it's really fun - I was picturing decorated felt wings that came out the back - but then the kid really wouldn't see them or be able to 'fly'. Yay!

My only recs - I don't think there should be little balls on the ends...because butterflies don't have them, i don't think. And maybe a little less fabric - because it looks more costume-y if there is too much going on. Does that make sense? Maybe I need to see it in person.

Thanks Carlee!

yeah...i am feeling you on the "costume-y" thing...that is what i dont want...i can take in the "wings" i think that would help. and the body is partly to hide stitching. it looked too bare without it...i could try one with felt too...but it took me 1/2 hour to get bryson out of the sweatshirt because he was having too much fun flying around....which makes me think the true "customer" may dig em...

I would definitely keep the fabric you are using, or something like it. It will need to be be flowy for sure! I would say no felt because too much felt can be a little costumey and too stiff for wings. Since the body of a butterfly is black could you use a black hoodie? and then add the black antennae? That orange with it would be pretty sweet. Very monarch.
hmmmmm...this is tough one Carlee. :)

I just thunk it's funny that Bryson wanted to wear it all day! That's really cute.
One thought: If you use less fabric for the wings, will the child not be able to hold his/her arms out to the side fully? That might be a consideration. I mean, no one wants a limited wing span. ;)
